As students enter their 4th week of our program, we begin working to create and/or refine their resume, identify top Dental Practices in their preferred area of town and work to help guide them on what to expect when interviewing. Many of students begin interviewing by week 7 and as you prepare for your interviews, it’s essential to know what to look for and ask during the process. Here are the main items to consider:
- Practice Culture and Philosophy
One of the most important factors to consider when interviewing with a dental practice is its culture and philosophy. You want to work with a team that shares your values and work ethic. Consider asking questions about the practice’s approach to patient care, team collaboration, and workplace culture. You can also research the practice online to get an idea of its reputation and reviews from previous employees and patients.
- Job Responsibilities and Expectations
During the interview, ask the hiring manager about the specific job responsibilities and expectations for the dental assistant role. It’s important to know what you’ll be doing day-to-day and the level of autonomy you’ll have in your work. You may also want to ask about the opportunities for growth and advancement within the practice.
- Training and Support
As a new dental assistant, you’ll want to work with a practice that provides adequate training and support. Consider asking about the onboarding process, mentorship opportunities, and continuing education programs. It’s important to know that you’ll have the resources you need to excel in your role and continue learning and growing as a professional.
- Compensation and Benefits
Of course, compensation and benefits are essential factors to consider when evaluating job opportunities. Ask about the salary range for the dental assistant role, as well as any benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, retirement plans, and continuing education reimbursement. Make sure you understand the full compensation package and any potential bonuses or incentives for exceptional performance.
- Professional Development Opportunities
Finally, consider asking about the professional development opportunities available to you within the practice. For example, does the practice offer opportunities to attend conferences or workshops, take additional training courses, or shadow other professionals within the practice? Knowing that you have opportunities to continue learning and growing can be a significant factor in deciding on a job offer.
As you interview with dental practices, be sure to ask about the practice culture and philosophy, job responsibilities and expectations, training and support, compensation and benefits, and professional development opportunities.
